Ottawa Doors Open

Hindu Temple of Ottawa - Carleton
4835 Bank St.
A religious, non-profit, charitable organization, the Temple is a center of learning for Vedanta, the Hindu philosophy. The Temple has nine shrines in the Mahamandap. Enshrined are the Scripture Bhavan Veda and Epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. There is a Yagnashala and an assembly hall, Gita Bhavan, for the solemnization of Samskars such as Upanayana and Vivaha, and for discourses of learned visiting Hindu scholars and saints.
Embassy of the Republic of Croatia

229 Chapel St.
Domestic Gothic Revival in design (Henry Horsey and J. Sheard, architects) this was home to many dignitaries over the years, including Frederic Toller, Auditor General of the Dominion's Currency in the 1880s. In 1999, it opened as the Embassy of Croatia after an award-winning restoration was completed. Guided tours. Access to ground level only.
All Saints Sandy Hill
317 Chapel St.
This stone church is reminiscent of churches of rural medieval England. The original stained glass windows are a prized feature, as is the tower's unique nine-bell chime. All Saints was known as a 'society' church until the mid-20th century. Special past events include a royal wedding in 1924 of Lois Booth to Prince Erick of Denmark, and the 1937 funeral of PM Sir Robert Borden a long-time parishioner. An increasing concern for social issues started with WWI soldiers, social work for the poor, and tennis courts for youth. In more recent times All Saints has founded a Women’s Shelter and Hospice.

Hazeldean Masonic Lodge
21 Young Rd.

Built in 1914, the Hazeldean Masonic Lodge has served local Masons and their visitors for almost a century. The functional storey-and-a-half timber-frame building is one of the few remaining heritage structures in Kanata that pre-date the modern urban community. Inside the building is a high ceiling and balcony. Heritage photos show the consecration of the Lodge in 1914 and Lodge officers throughout the years. Masonic furnishings include the Master's and Wardens' chairs and columns, an altar with the Bible, and other pieces used in Masonic rituals. Members of the Lodge will answer questions and discuss Masonic history and traditions.

We spent, in total, about two hours talking with a master of Mason loge. He talked about all levels, insignia, some ceremonies which he can revile to us, he spoke about the purpose of masons, about the famous Masons, about rules of admission and introduced us to one of the Knight.

To become Mason need to be a man over 21 years and believe in the Lord (no matter which one).

Laurier House National Historic Site of Canada
Laurier House commemorates two of Canada's most notable prime ministers, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and the Rt. Hon. William Lyon Mackenzie King. For over fifty years, from 1897 to 1948, the house occupied a central position in the political life of Canada, as the place of residence of Laurier and, after his death, of Mackenzie King. King bequeathed the house to the "Government and people of Canada" in the belief that future generations would be interested in the place where they lived, where they entertained dignitaries and politicians, and where they often conducted the business of the country.
