THE MUSICAL WORLD of ELENA DENISOVA

Еlenа Denisovа again in our blog. Great music and wonderful sunny performer from Austria!
The Ouverture spirituelle: opening fest for the Salzburg Festival
Kollegienkirche (Kollegien Church), 23.July 2016, 17-18h
St. Petersburg’ violin virtuoso, Conductor and Composer Iwan Chandoschkin created a considerable heritage, even though only 4 Sonatas and a dozen of Variations had been maintained and are known now. His legislation is a transition from the classical tradition of Corelli and Tartini into national Russian school of sensibility and early Romanticism. Elena Denisova will play a solo concert with the sonatas No. 1, 2 and 3 in the beautiful sound atmosphere of Kollegien Church and thus enable the pieces of Chandoschkin to their impressive premiere at the Salzburg Festival. As an ambassador of tonal sensuality, Elena Denisova is among the most charismatic personalities of the international violin elite. The special sound comes off the Evah Pirazzi Gold Strings of Pirastro.

Salzburger Nachrichten, 25th of July 2016
„Discoveries start off the overture“
The first Mozart matinee with a bizarre program surprises just as much as a violinist at the „Celebration of the festival opening“
...
Even more astonishing surprises were found at the church „Kollegienkirche“ on Saturday as the Russian violinist Elena Denisova performed at the „Celebration of the festival opening“: Apparently there was – even before Paganini – a Russian violinist and composer of whom we didn´t even know the name: Ivan Chandoshkin ( 1747 – 1804 ) – unfortunately only very few pieces of him are preserved. Especially in the sonata op. 3 No 1 the Italian devil´s violinist is anticipated. The three solo sonatas which were performed at the church can only make us assume how large this still- baroque and already Russian – evoked repertoire must be. How brilliant and without any slightest blur in intonation, this delicate music was presented by Denisova, cannot be left unmentioned.
A dual discover, if you will, and with the Haydn requiem even treble one!

THE MUSICAL WORLD of ELENA DENISOVA

Elena with Campanula‏

La Bohème

Anna Samuil-Mimi

Georgy Vasiliev -Rodolfo
www.lyricoperahouse.com/

Some day, when I'm awfully low, When the world is cold, I will feel a glow just thinking of you... And the way you look tonight. Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm And your cheeks so soft, There is nothing for me but to love you, And the way you look tonight.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s National Arts Centre, April 28 “Alice in Wonderland”

NAC The National Ballet of Canada

Works by George Balanchine, Marie Chouinard, Crystal Pite. This diverse program offers a sweeping look at the development of contemporary ballet vocabulary, featuring the pioneering early work Sérénade by George Balanchine, a recreation of the exquisite 24 Preludes by Chopin by "Queen of the Avant-Garde" Marie Chouinard, and the dynamic Emergence, a new commission by Vancouver’s visionary Crystal Pite.

First on the program list is work by Russian-born George Balanchine. The performance features his pioneering early work Serenade, considered by many to be his masterpiece. Serenade was Balanchine’s first work upon arriving in America, created in 1935 for students at the newly formed School of American Ballet.  This is a powerful piece and will feature the National Arts Centre Orchestra under the baton of David Briskin. http://blog.nac-cna.ca/blog/2010/10/18/the-national-ballet-of-canada-performs-a-little-balanchine/

Metropolitan opera CARMEN Bizet

HABANERA Carmen by Elina Garanca

Elina Garanca, as one of the most vocally stimulating and visually alluring Carmens in recent memory, places Don José's self-destructive decisions into proper perspective: Under Garanca's spell, this man had about as much a chance of staving off disaster as the bull in the toreador's arena. And he's not alone: By the second act I was prepared to give it all up (mother included) and follow Garanca to a remote gypsy hideaway in the mountains. The plot of Bizet's Carmen centers around an army corporal, Don José (Roberto Alagna), who is torn between an infatuation with the manipulative femme fatale, Carmen (Garanca), and the redemptive forces in his life, represented by the innocent Micaëla (Barbara Frittoli).
Garcia's Carmen is a three-dimensional, hands-on character who uses body and voice, props, staging, and dancing to convey her irresistible persona. When arrested and placed in the hands of Don José, Garanca uses a set of handcuffs and a rope tethered to him to stage a powerfully suggestive Seguidilla, inviting her captor to allow her to escape and accompany her to Lillas Pastia's Tavern. At the tavern, Garanca dances wildly on the tables during the rowdy gypsy song of seduction (Les tringles des sistres tintaient), and later, when Don José enters the tavern, Garanca teases him (during the Castanets Dance) with a lap-dance.
Curiously, Garanca downplays her character's seductive demeanor (some men will no doubt disagree with this) and aims instead to project herself as a poised, confident manipulator — one who has only one talent in life, but knows when and how to use it to her advantage. When Don José pays her only scant attention early in the first act, Garanca simply shifts into a higher gear and scoops her unwitting passenger on board. Similarly, in the famed Habanera (sung while Garanca casually begins washing her shirt and feet), she delivers the initial verse with an aloofness that lay somewhere between boredom and "been-there-done-that." Only at the repeat of the verse does Garanca turn up the heat, and it is to great effect.

Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company

                Prelude
Single presentation in Ottawa (NAC)
Yesterday IC invited me for the balet Morphoses, which has homes in London and New York, was set up to foster fresh ideas in dance by showcasing modern ballets by Wheeldon and others. What I can say: For me it was best performance since I saw Irina Kolpakova in Жизель.

Rubinald Pronk is the best!

Softly As I Leave You (music by J.S. Bach/Avro Part), an extended duet by the choreographic duo Lightfoot Leon, is no more rewarding. The dancing by Drew Jacoby and Rubinald Pronk is showy, in a portentous sort of way – she starts off trapped in a wooden box, he ends up replacing her – but no amount of hyperextended développés a la seconde can cover up the piece's glib insincerity, or excuse the breathtakingly inappropriate use of adagios by Bach and Arvo Pärt (yes, Spiegel im Spiegel again). Lightfoot Leon have been turning out slick-surfaced material like this for some years now, and there are places where it is considered high art. Unfortunately for Morphoses, they don't include London or New York, the cities in which the company pitches its tent.(by Luke Jennings, The Observer)

The Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, now based in New York, continues to deliver one stunning surprise after another. Here he offers Boléro, just the kind of choreographic fillip that Morphoses needs. With its novel, witty and intelligent use of the classical vocabulary and its irresistible Ravel score (conducted with enormous fun by Paul Murphy), Boléro lifts the spirits. The six dancers (including a standout Wendy Whelan from New York City Ballet) are fashioned as contestants; each has a number on the chest. The choreography sends them flying on a sensual and athletic pulse that sweeps all before it, as it swoops and soars out of sheer delight. (The Times,October 23, 2009, Debra Craine)

with Anna Netrebko & Elīna Garanča

Kate Lindsey and Joseph Calleja in the Metropolitan Opera’s staging of Offenbach’s opera “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” Love her.
Anna Netrebko and Alan Held in “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.”
I love her soprano so much, she was clearly the vocal star among the female singers, but I do not feel her passion in the role of Antonia. Looks like she was distant from the character, with no worm filling in her eyes, and no right body language. Pity.

Kathleen Kim a living doll

I heard, that Netrebko was supposed to perform all four Hoffmann paramours and I am so happy that it did not happen. Kim fashioned the role of crazed inventor Spalanzani's mechanical amusement Olimpia from visual to aural perfection. The petite coloratura soprano won the crowd over with her dexterous miming of the doll's herky-jerky motions. We were thrilled by her performance.
We had a lot of amassing experience with this piece. The performance continued for around three and a half hours and we enjoyed every single moment of it. But, of cause, it is steel surrogate (like instant coffee instead of prepared from grains)– no feeling of real theatre. We were so disappointed with the costumes and stage décor.
Jacques Offenbach (born Jacob Offenbach; 20 June 1819 – 5 October 1880) was a German-born French. The Tales of Hoffmann (Les Contes d'Hoffmann), composed at the end of his career, has become the most familiar of Offenbach's works in major opera houses.
